Dating over 2500 years old the origins of Shiatsu are firmly deep-rooted in the ancient Chinese/Oriental medicine. The principles are pressure point therapy used for healing, purification, detoxification, and stimulating energy. This approach gradually became an integral part of the existing health practices, and spread along with other Chinese healing arts throughout Southeast Asia.
Among these arts was the ancient “Massage and Point pressing” known as Anma, and practiced in many cases by the blind, due to their extraordinary sense of “feeling through touching”. Amma (Anma in Japanese) has been used for centuries to deal with many common ailments, aches and pains as well as treating more serious “diseases”. New influences from traditional Eastern medicine and Western science have gradually shaped it into what is today called Shiatsu.
Shiatsu is a Japanese word meaning “finger pressure”. “Finger (shi) and pressure (atsu)”.
Shiatsu uses few techniques and to an observer it would appear that little is happening. It is a relaxed pressure at various points on the body with the hand or thumb, an easy leaning of the elbows or a simple rotation of a limb. It almost seems a lazy activity. Shiatsu uses these techniques to adjust the body’s physical structure and its natural inner energies, to help prevent off illness, and maintain good health.
Shiatsu regulates the nervous system and promotes natural healing by stimulating chemical responses in the body. It triggers the release of hormones and body chemicals necessary to heal, to soothe and to make your mind and body perform at their peak. The theory of Shiatsu is based on anatomy, physiology and pathology. Altogether, there are over 800 basic Shiatsu pressure points, These pressure points are located on the muscles, nerves, blood vessels, lymph vessels, bones and endocrine glands.
THE ESSENCE OF SHIATSU: This is the practical part of Shiatsu: “diagnosis and therapy combined”. Your Shiatsu therapist’s palms and fingers are sensitive enough to detect differences in temperature and stiffness, both indicators of the condition of the body. Depending on the condition of the body, your therapist will apply appropriate types of pressure. The tighter the muscles are, the lighter the pressure. As the muscles relax, the pressure becomes deeper. Because the sensitivity is in the palms and fingers, only these are used during a treatment. Knuckles, fists, elbows and knees lack the required sensitivity and they are never used during a Shiatsu Treatment. The finger and palm pressure is always firm and steady.
THE PHILOSOPHY OF SHIATSU: Vital energy (known as Ki in Japanese) flows throughout the body in a series of channels called meridians. For many different reasons Ki can stop flowing freely which may produce health issues. Your Shiatsu practitioner will consider the state of health, the symptoms you are experiencing, she will then use a variety of techniques to improve your energy flow. As the quality of Ki changes, the symptoms associated with a lack of flow will gradually improve. Shiatsu is a therapy that works on the individual as a complete being – not just the physical body but also on an emotional and/or mental level.
Benefits: The immediate benefits of Shiatsu differ with each client. A sense of well-being is common, deep relaxation usually occurs. Some client’s feel cold or experience flu-like symptoms, aches and pains, or headaches after the first treatment. These symptoms will only last for a day or so and usually subside with each treatment. If these symptoms continue, consult a doctor immediately. In general, any such affects you are experiencing are positive signs from your body is telling you it is making an attempt to correct its own condition in a natural way. These are signs of elimination and the beginning of the healing process. Shiatsu is a deeply relaxing experience and regular Shiatsu sessions help to prevent the build-up of stress in our daily lives. Following a Shiatsu treatment, you may have feelings of increased vitality and relaxation.
People of all ages, including babies and children, experience lasting, beneficial results from a therapeutic Shiatsu treatment. Shiatsu therapy is an important part of a preventative or rehabilitative health care program.
Through its stimulation of the hormone system Shiatsu can also affect the digestive and reproductive systems. Apart from bringing relief to symptoms, Shiatsu gradually corrects long term postural and behavioral imbalances leading to improved body/ mind awareness and a general sense of wellbeing and peace of mind.
After treatment, you may experience relief from discomforts–relief from pain, increased flexibility, calmer mood, and clearer mind. You will find that deep, restful sleep comes more easily for several nights. You may feel tired or headachy for a few hours, or may temporarily experience minor localized muscle stiffness. This is a normal reaction to the treatment as the body readjusts and rebalances and will pass within 1 to 3 days.
