The origins of reflexology, or zone therapy as it was called, still remain a mystery.  Dr William Fitzgerald states that a form of treatment utilizing pressure points was known in India and China 5,000 years ago. Another belief is that it began in ancient Egypt, a theory evidenced by a tomb drawing dating back to 2,330 BC. Others credit the birth of it to the ancient Peruvian civilization of the Incas
12,000 BC. Clearly, there is a lot more history regarding reflexology

Dr Fitzgerald discovered that the body could be divided into ten equal longitudinal energy zones, five relating to the right half of the body and five to the left, by drawing an imaginary line from the top of the head down through the centre of the body. These ten energy zones end on the soles of the feet and the palms of the hands. Zone one, for example, incorporates the thumb, extends up the arm into the shoulders and neck to the brain, and then down the body to the big toe. Each zone ends at a toe and finger.

For reflexology therapists, health and well-being require a holistic approach, which means treating the whole person: the body, the mind and the spirit. This entails looking at both the physical and emotional state of the person and their life style. The body is treated as an integrated whole in the understanding that when one system is out of order, every system is affected. Disorders are often detected during the course of treatment. Some reflex areas are found to be painful, thereby indicating specific problems requiring extra attention. However, reflexology
is not a method of diagnosis. Remember that if you encounter any serious conditions, you should advise your patient to consult a doctor.
